Celebrating the Ressurection

Today was a wonderful Easter Sunday. I loved the talks. I loved the music. And most of all I loved talking about Easter and the blessings of the atonement and the resurrection with the primary. We have a little girl in our ward who is in a wheelchair. She gave a talk today and talked about a baby cousin of hers that only lived for a few hours. She talked about how she looks forward, one day to playing with her when they both have resurrected bodies. It caused me to imagine her without her wheelchair, with legs that walk for her and a perfect and whole body, and how truly delighted I am sure she will be with it and with the chance to play with her little cousin. It brought tears to my eyes!! so grateful to have these things to look forward too!!

Happy Birthday Peirce

Today my little boy turned 9 years old. Where does the time go??

So glad you are part of our family dear Peirce. You have always been a thoughtful and good boy....and I love you to bits! We are so glad to have you in our family!!

Maybe They Are Learning!

Sometimes you don't realize how much your kids know until now and then you overhear conversations they have with others. Peirce was talking with a friend about Easter. He said something about Jesus and Easter, and his friend said, "Jesus?! There's no Jesus stuff in Easter. Easter's all about fun!" Peirce kind of looked at me, we both shrugged and went on. Then another day he was talking with someone about Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. It was an adult and he hadn't heard of the play, so Peirce was explaining it. He did a pretty good job explaining where the story is from and what it's about. He explained that there's this guy Jacob who has a favorite son named Joseph. The person he was talking to said, "Oh! Joseph! Is he the guy that hooked up with Mary?" Peirce responded, "No silly. We're talking about the Old Testament, not the New Testament." Clearly there was some scripture understanding there that Peirce had that this person really didn't. It warmed my heart. Sometimes I wonder if our efforts to teach kids the scriptures are working - but clearly Peirce has some good knowledge that your average adult doesn't seem to!

Scriptures and Song

On Saturday Peirce and I got to volunteer at Storybook Theatre and we saw Joseph and the Amazong Tevhnicolor Dreamcoat. I have always loved that story and have told my kids the story a lot, so Peirce was quite familiar with the story. Still, I was amazed at how much he got out of it. And it has caused my heart to swell to see how he has found the music on You Tube to listen to it over and over, and he even found the lyrics online to print them off and sing along. He loves the music and he sure knows the story now!! Storybook Theatre did a great job of it. I loved it! I keep telling people they should go see it. Tonight I went with Jill. We volunteered again, and therebwas no way Peirce was going to miss out. He loved it even more the second time! There is magic in that show. I wish we could get Andrew Lloyd Webber to write some Book of Mormon musicals. Imagine??!

Things I Never Said When I Was a Kid

Look mom....I know how to make my graphics all pixilated
- Peirce while playing around on the laptop....I think I figure out what pixels were in my 40s

Sometimes when I use juicy words my friends don't know what I'm talking about.
- Peirce......whose vocabulary often surprises me

Why can't I have my own laptop?
- Jill and Peirce off and on

Should I watch TV on the TV or on the computer?
- Peirce......sometimes I wonder why we bother paying for cable

Why can't I have an iPod too??
- both my kids

I NEED a phone!!
- my daughter from about age 9 until she got a phone at age 12...which seemed too young to me

Do you have the full version of that game?

I Love Primary

I have been thinking today about how much I love my calling. I ran into someone at the swim meet this past weekend who used to be in a ward with me. We chatted for quite a while to catch up with each other. One of our topics was callings we've loved and hated. When I was called to be the Primary President in my ward I laughed and said I wasn't sure I was the right person for the job because I really don't like other people's children. The Bishop laughed too and continued with his invitation. I have had the calling now for two years, and I have to say, I have sure grown to love other people's children. Even some of them, in their less than lovable moments, are dear to my heart. A couple of times the Bishop has asked me if this calling is too much for our family since my husband is also in the Bishopric. Sometimes I think it is, but I sure can't imagine serving anywhere else. I love it and am happy to continue to serve n primary. I have also really grown to admire the parents of children in our ward. Their kids are so darn good, and that doesn't happen by chance. What a great bunch of people I get to rub shoulders with!

My ride to church

On my ride to church thus morning I came within a hair of a car accident. As I came across the top of a hill a guy was backing out of his driveway. I slammed on the brakes and hit the horn and started to slide (spring snow storm yesterday = lots of heavy wet snow). I came to a stop seriously an inch away from his car. A member of our ward was behind me and she said she was praying as she saw it happen. Had to have been what saved us from crashing.

When I sat down in the chapel man, was my heart racing!

Zombiekins (Kevin Bolger)

One thing about having a boy is that I have to do a little more work to find books that interest hm. It was easy to share the books I loved growing up with Jill. Peirce isn't always quite as thrilled with my suggestions.

The other day Jill and I went to Coles and I ran into "Sir Fartsalot slays the Booger". I knew it would be a winner. However, I also have a personal book policy which means I have to check the library first (and besides, do I really want Sir Fartsalot on my bookshelf for the long term?)

Well, the library doesn't have that book. But they did have another one by that author called Zombiekins, so I figure we would give it a try.

Well, big hit, to say the least!

We started it tonight. After each chapter where I attempted to put the book down I would hear, "Just one more chapter, please!"

Can't really argue with that!

The best part was listening to Peirce laugh. It was the bust a gut, from the bottom of your belly, kind of laughing. It was great!! I would end up laughing just because he was laughing so hard.

The bit about the author says he is from Ontario and taught school for ten years before he wrote the Sir Fartsalot. A lot of the descriptive paragraphs about leaving the classroom with a bathroom pass and the trip there, or about the mean teacher (Mr. Baldengrumpy) just made me chuckle. I think this guy really does have kids figured out!

.....I might just go spend the $12 to get Sir Fartsalot after we finish Zombiekins. We read half of it (103 pages!) tonight!

How to find great books....

Perhaps there is some secret sort of homing instinct in books that brings them to their perfect readers. How delightful if that were true.
