Carnival L'Hiver 2012

Peirce's school had a carnival today. One of the really cool things they did was build an ice fort. This is Peirce working on it. All the families froze a block of ice in a milk carton. It wasn't easy getting them to stack. They had to use sand and salt to melt it a little and get them to stick. Just the kind of project Peirce loves! He had a great day.

No Ordinary Day by Deborah Ellis

I actually read this book on Christmas Day but haven't blogged about it yet. I read it while we were driving down to Lethbridge. I'm starting a new book club and for our first meeting we all are supposed to read a Deborah Ellis book. This was one I hadn't read yet. I quite enjoyed it!

The story is about a girl named Valli, who lives in India. Her parents are dead and she lives with relatives. Well, she thinks they're relatives - but finds out they're just kind people who have taken her in. Since she isn't related, she decides to strike out on her own. The book has comments about "the monsters" who live in seclusion because they have leprosy. As the story goes on we find out that Valli also has leprosy - but there is a way she can look after that, if only she will.

The story is an interesting insight into poverty and people trying to help those suffering. I totally recommend it!

New Calling

Have I mentioned that I have a new calling?!

I'm excited about it.

But I can't spill the means yet because I haven't been sustained.

I asked Allen today why they didn't do that.....turns out they forgot.

Maybe next week I will blog about it!

Happy Birthday To Me!

Everyone should get to spend their birthday in an elementary school. Yesterday was hilarious. They sang to me on the announcements, they broke out in spontaneous song when I went out to bring them in from recess, they sang to me when I handed out licorice for a birthday teat to share, and wherever I went, as I walked down the hall, kids who never say anything would wish me a happy birthday. By the end of the day I started to think that it was all really a kick!

Today I got up early because it was our turn to drive to swim practice. I really don't mind driving because I get a lot done while I'm there. Today I got some marking done that I had been procrastinating. Yea!!

After swimming I went to a writing workshop that I had decided to treat myself to. It was so fun to just go do something that I'm interested in just because I wanted to....usually the to do lists take over and I don't do things like that. It felt so good!

When I got home it was present time. I got a new lamp for my bedside table, and lighting for my make up table. Yea!! I also got a hoodie from mom, and the school council parents gave me a gift card to Sephoria! (I will have to figure out what that is LOL)

After that we decided to go out for lunch. We went to the Chinese food buffet place in the mall. We try it about every 5 years. It's still gross. Maybe we'll wait 10 years for the next try.

I also went and got a aqua massage, courtesy of my dear husband. Man, that is relaxing!

Then when we got home Allen had looked after dinner.

Now that's how a day should go! No concerns. No to do lists....just enjoy the day. I need to do that more often!

Thanks to my dear family for making it so great. Tonight we're all hitting the sack early....which should make tomorrow a great day too. :)

Boy Power

Next quote of the day from Peirce: As his friend, Anthony opens the van door, "You are a skilled man! My sister has a lot of friends that can't open that door and they're teenagers!"

My Sharp Dressed Man

Quote of the day from Peirce: "Mom, I like hanging out after Cubs..."(I'm thinking he is telling me he is enjoying spending time with is dear old mother) ".....cause the ladies love a man in a uniform."

Turkish Delight and Reading

Our book club book for the Gr 3 book club this month is The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. I have been thinking I need to have little mid-month incentives for kids and so I found a recipe for Turkish Delight, the witch's mesmerizing treat. Then, while in Superstore I found some to buy!! Yea!! The recipe seemed a little complicated....just the kind of thing that would take me three tries and three nights of cooking, so I was happy to buy it.

The deal was if they have the book they could come get some Turkish Delight. I am not sure the Turkish Delight was a big hit, but it has created a buzz! Just what I was hoping!

I am really excited about the next book club choices....can't wait to see what they pick! Definitely have some good ideas for mid month incentives!
