Teaching Scripture - backfire!!

There's a funny thing about me....I don't get hungry like the rest of my family does. It's always driven Allen nuts that I can go for hours without thinking about eating (and it makes me wonder why it is I have a weight issue!). Apparently it also drives my kids nuts. The last two days they've complained that I don't feed them on time. This morning I was enjoying our first day of summer break and lounging in bed longer than usually when the cries of, "We're hungry!" started. I continued to ignore them until Jill finally came into my room, and stood, with her hands on her hips and declared, "Mom! You're not supposed to suffer that your children go hungry! Isn't THAT your favorite scripture!"

I laughed out loud. I have often quoted that scripture to my kids - but not focused on the part about feeding them. I usually rush over that part. When they're quarreling I sit them on the stairs and pull out Mosiah 4:14 and loudly proclaim: "And ye will not suffer your children that they go hungry, or naked; neither will ye suffer that they transgress the laws of God, and fight and quarrel one with another, and serve the devil, who is the master of sin, or who is the evil spirit which hath been spoken of by our fathers, he being an enemy to all righteousness."

And then, with even great vehemence, I continue on with the next verse: But ye will teach them to walk in the ways of truth and soberness; ye will teach them to love one another, and to serve one another. "

...and then I make them come up with something they can do to show love and to serve each other.

Well, I thought it was pretty funny that she should use that scripture on me.

You're right my dear Jill. I'll repent and try to remember to cook for you on time. hee hee
