School Book Club

I've wanted to do this for so long...and finally have the chance!

I'm paired up with a teacher and we're doing an extra curricular club....grade 4-6 book club. It's so fun!

Today we discussed The Invention of Hugo Cabaret. It's so fun to discuss books with kids! For an activity we played, "I'm reading Hugo Cabaret and I've read about....."

A=Automaton
B=Booth (as in toy booth)
C=clocks
D=drawings
E=Etienne
F=France
G=gar (as in train station?)
H=Hugo
I=

....and so on and so on!

It was fun!

I noticed the French, was is just for this book, or are you in a French Immersion program? What are your thoughts on bilingual and immersion programs in Calgary? I love reading your blog, you are such an educated mom, I hardly comment, but you know what? it is very inspiring, I love it when you talk about different books, my little two year old is so in love with books already, it is such a great blessing! Any tips on teaching children how to read? so many questions, so little time! ;)

Monica! Thanks for your comment :0)

Yes, my kids are in French Immersion. We love it. It's been a great thing for them. I don't think it's for all kids - but if it works for your family, it's a great thing. I think it's one of those best kept secrets out there. Smaller classes, great kids, and wonderful teachers. We love it.

I think it's a wonderful choice, education-wise.

So much to say on teaching kids to read. There's a world of reading readiness stuff. Main thing: read read read. We did a Learn to Read Using the Book of Mormon with Peirce that I thought was a sound approach. It worked quite well. I never pushed it a lot though. My kids weren't really early readers - but they do love reading!
